2. St. Mary Major

Info: The Oppian Hill is one of the two heights of the Esquiline together with the Cispio. On its slopes were located popular houses, while on the summit were stately homes included in the Domus Aurea. With the death of Nero this was buried and the baths of Titus and Trajan were built on top.

Info: The area of the Forum, originally marshy, was reclaimed through one of the very first urban works of Ancient Rome: the Cloaca maxima. The area of the Forum hosts all the largest public and sacred buildings of Republican Rome. The most ancient Roman temples such as the sanctuaries of Saturn or the Dioscuri, the basilicas such as Julia and Emilia.

Info: The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere was probably the first place of Christian worship built in Rome, certainly the first dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, the church was erected by St. Julius I in 340 on the oratory founded by Pope Callixtus I in the third century.
5. Venice Square

Info: Work of Trajan’s architect and military engineer Apollodorus who dug the mountain saddle that connected the Capitoline Hill and the Quirinal, opening a passage towards the Campus Martius. The various buildings that make up Trajan’s Markets are distinguished by their functionality. The lower part for activities directly related to the Forum, while the upper part is dedicated to management and administrative activities.

Info: Castel Sant’Angelo is a mausoleum, desired and designed by Hadrian as his tomb and his successors. Defined as the Passetto, a direct passage to the Vatican walls, it allowed the head of the Church to take refuge in case of need. Its strategic importance in the darkest and most painful periods for Rome and the Church was used by Alexander VI Borgia and by Pope Clement VII Medici (1523-1534) who took refuge in the Castle during the Sack of Rome.

Info: The Ara Pacis Augustae wanted by the Senate of Rome in July of the year 13 BC to celebrate Augustus after the military campaigns in Gaul and Spain. For a long time forgotten buried due to the flooding of the Tiber. The rediscovery in 1568 at the corner between via in Lucina and via del giardino Theodoli. In 1937, it was Mussolini who started the reconstruction of the Ara.

Info: Piazza Barberini is located between the Quirinal Hill and the Sallustian Gardens, it is located at the top of the hill. It takes its name from Palazzo Barberini which overlooks the right and which houses the important Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica which collects countless works of art.
